"Family in prayer"

Oil on canvas,
Signed lower left,
Various exhibition numbers appear on the back of the painting as well as a difficult to read name "Léon de Laurre?" most certainly from a former collector.

This beautiful work in warm colors is a subject that the artist has been able to deal with on different occasions. In fact, processions, outings from mass, Fêtes-dieu, solemn communions seem to be a theme dear to the artist. No doubt because it translates his desire to bear witness to Provençal traditions. The artist has chosen to represent here an intimate moment of this Avignon family, namely a moment of prayer.

A student of Ingres, Delacroix and Flandrin, he exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1864 and 1882. Friend of the poets Félibrige, he will endeavor to translate the traditions of Provence and the Comtadines. In 1878, he was appointed director of the Ecole des Beaux-arts in the city of Avignon, a position he held until his death in 1906. Considered to be the leader of the Nouvelle Ecole d'Avignon, he will inspire by his teaching in the open air and his virtuosity in the use of colors including white many of his students, future artists.

The Louis Vouland Foundation in Avignon organized a major retrospective, with more than a hundred works by the artist, from November 2008 to January 2009, of which a book has been published. The work presented is unpublished and does not appear in this work.
This painting can be compared to the work “Women in prayer” illustrated on page 127 of the work on the artist.

Size: 58 x 35 cm without its frame and 72 x 46 cm with its original carved and gilded wooden frame.
