Decorative Art: rare "troubadour" object, 1825/1830.
A fleeting revival of the French neo-Gothic style, of which the Duchess of Berry has become the muse. “Marie-Caroline, Duchesse de Berry will place many orders, some of which remain among the most beautiful pieces of the Troubadour style. This is the case with a box ordered from the Sèvres factory and produced by Jean-Charles François Leloy in 1829. For the apartments of the Duchess in the Tuileries, Jacob-Desmalter delivered in 1821 a "Gothic table in ebony wood and "a table adorned with a design by Thierry comprising ornaments and Gothic ogives cut from the mass of wood." The Duchess is not content to order pieces from the greatest craftsmen of the moment, she also runs the shops of novelties, "where it makes ample harvest of works of art, bronzes, clocks, furniture and knickknacks of Gothic spirit that romanticism has brought back into fashion".
Our troubadour candlestick is bronze, it is dedicated to hunts, to hounds, to falcon (see the beautiful hooded bird), it is chiseled on all surfaces with an abundant decoration of Gothic arches.
