Russian school circa 1900 "Birch wood", oil on panel 58 X 31 cm mounted in a large damaged golden frame 81 X 54 cm. Signature or monogram lower left made illegible by a paint chip. Photos are powerless to capture impasto and contrasts. There are anecdotes that we wouldn't dare to invent because they are so incredible, but reality often goes beyond fiction. This painting had been hanging in our room for a long time in good company (????), when Ma Chérie made me understand that the hopes of attribution of the many works I kept diminished as I grew older. Also, I picked up two, a Vue de Saint-Briac and this one, and the next day, as it was held in Pau, I left alone to open the Galerie de Biarritz where I presented them. That same afternoon, a collector friend who had never been to this one visited me and expressed his incomprehension of the fact that I was selling the Breton painting that I was therefore repacking. At night, as I was bored on my own, I would skip in front of the television and come across a news channel where President Putin could be seen receiving one of his counterparts in his office with the big brother on my board behind him! So back to square one where my research led me to the late works of Isaac Lévitan (1860-1900). Without claiming that it is a work of the Master (I do not know if there is an expert specialist who could), I find however that it is very close to it and anyway, it is beautiful ! Do not hesitate to ask us for photos or additional information by email or phone. Other photos and many other objects in our stores in Pau and Biarritz and on our website: galerielhoste.com.
