Ange-Louis Janet was admitted in 1833 to the École des beaux-arts de Paris in the workshops of Ingres, Alexandre Colin and Horace Vernet with whom he made drawings of the History of Napoleon4. He began at the Salon in 1836 and continued to participate until 1870. He painted hunting scenes, military costumes and portraits5 and composed paintings retracing episodes in French history, such as the Crimean War of 1853-18566, the Italian Campaign of 1859 or the Mexican Expedition from 1861 to 1867.He provided illustrations for newspapers such as L'Illustration, Le Tour du Monde, the Journal Amusing and the Journal pour rire as well as for many literary works7
