Object description :

"A Transition Giltwood And Laqued Trumeau "
Important transition period trumeaul with musical attributes in gilded wood on a lacquer background, decorative panel between two rectangular shaped windows, it is divided into two distinct parts of one third - two thirds. The upper part is adorned with a voluble cartouche of interlacing intertwining fine olive branches, decorated in the middle part with an antique trophy of Italian-style musical instruments. Neoclassical trophy inspired by the commedia dell ' arte, where mandolin, fife, triangle, castanets and other musical scores are suspended, tied with a ribbon, tied with a knot with large loops to a peg. In the main, a real Provencal ice cream sets the scene. This one is made up, laterally, of two large curved braces punctuated by involuting windings and raised by rosebushes in flowers with clerestory under which are slipped thin ice cubes. These are horizontally joined together by centered reserves of delicate asymmetrical rockeries, from which emerge rosebuds and peonies, themselves lined with the same fine glacettes; thus amplifying with graceful perspective and depth. The whole enchases the main glass, this one as well as the multiple glacettes are issued from a glass plate. A flat glass plate lined with tin and lead which, once immersed in a bath of mercury to dissolve them, will give the glass the warm and luminous side of a mercury mirror. The quality of the work of sculpture in strong relief accentuated by that of the burnished and matis or other reparures, as well as the great care brought to the elements of connection are of an irreproachable quality. The expression of the work brought to this trumeau is unquestionably sure and affirmed, born jointly from the expert hands of master sculptors and gilders of great experience. We find in this decoration the beautiful classical ornaments of the decorative arts of the transition of the reigns of Louis XV and his grandson Louis XVI around 1770 - 1775; a period when the discoveries of Herculaneum and Pompeii strongly influenced the stylistic characters of the so-called "Greek" period. Balance, nervousness, elegance as well as quality are the most appropriate terms for this trumeau which is very representative of this transitional period. It is worth noting that an elegant and fine gilded wood cornice with a gilded wood doucine at the top of the overmantel (visible separately on the photographs) is very present. It is designed to hide the inks used to fix the overmantel. This one has not been repositioned in the store for technical reasons due to the warhead stones in the store, but will be repositioned when it is installed. Dimensions: Height 245.5cm; width 85cm.
