"Flemish Diptych Sundial In Ivory, Dated 1553"
Early Flemish diptych ivory sundial, dated 1553. This sundial is reminiscent of the famous Dieppe sundials of the 1660-1690 period, which only function when the magnetic declination is 0. This sundial from the south of the Netherlands is over a century older and made for a 51 degree latitude. This could be Antwerpen (at the time an ivory import port, among others), Brugge, Gent or possibly Leuven. The declination is indicated inside at approximately 10-11 degrees East, which corresponds to 1553. In the east direction is placed a master point, 2 crossed I in red.
With dutch CITES declaration.
