Object description :

"Eugénio Lucas Y Padilla (1817-1870) Spanish Folk Dance"
A Spanish festive scene by the artist Eugénio Lucas Y Padilla known as "Eugénio Lucas Velasquez". The work is an oil on canvas which measures 32.5 cm by 40.5 cm. It is not signed but was attributed by the expert René Millet during an auction in Marseille in 2009. Some old restorations (welds of the canvas) are visible on the back, but nothing visible on the painting side. A pretty, engaging and colorful work. A student of the San Fernando Academy in Madrid, Eugenio Lucas particularly admired the art of Diego Velázquez, Esteban Murillo and Francisco Goya. If he owes his nickname to the first, it is the last of these great painters who played the most important role in Lucas's work. He was indeed one of the most talented followers (along with Leonardo Alenza) of Goya, whose quick touch and impasto he perfectly possessed, and whose fascination he also shared for the darkest and most archaic aspects of Iberian civilization, like the Inquisition, banditry or bullfighting. Several works by Lucas have also been attributed to Goya. His travels, in Morocco in particular, influenced his landscapes and his orientalist paintings. He married a sister of another romantic painter from Madrid, Jenaro Pérez Villaamil. In 1851, he was appointed painter of the king's chamber and knight of the order of Charles III. In 1855, he exhibited some of his works at the Universal Exhibition in Paris.
