African Woman in Terracotta Josef Arnost Gause (Split Lucac, Czechoslovakia, 23 Mar 1910 - Ontario, 1989) was a 20th century Czech sculptor who lived in Belgium and later settled in Canada. Gause married Olga Florizoone, daughter of Albertic Florizoone, mayor of Oostduinkerke. He produced many religious sculptures, among others for the Saint-Bernard church in Nieuwpoort, the Beguinage chapel in Diksmuide and for the Saint-Nicolas church in Oostduinkerke. Gause also made many small sculptures in terracotta or bronze: Fishermen on Horseback, Dancing Woman with Tambourine (1946), Horse Attacked by a Tigress (1943). The sculptor Pieter Florizoone was his employee and apprentice for about a year. Gause moved to Canada in 1950.
