A chiaroscuro executed to perfection, a real mastery of light which denote the great artistic qualities of the painter. He gives us a fine example with this oil on wood panel representing the portrait of a woman treated in the manner of the Dutch painters. The work is highlighted by a more recent gilded wood frame which suits it well. Signature lower left. Dimensions: 35 cm x 26 cm and 43 cm x 34 cm with the frame Good condition. In its own juice, some retouching to the painting mainly in the background. Born April 8, 1830 in Chasselay in the Rhône, he died in Nesles-la-Vallée on October 20, 1919. Jean Antoine Bail studied art at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, he was a pupil of Louis Guy and Bonnefon. He debuted at the Salon of this city, in 1854, with an "Interior of workshop". Critics were very favorable to this canvas, whose skilful lighting was praised. Subsequently, JA Bail manifested himself mainly as an interior painter. His paintings, very numerous, were a great success. His sons are both also painters, on the one hand Franck-Antoine, on the other hand Joseph, with whom his work is sometimes confused.
