The subject of the painting is inspired by songs of gesture dating from medieval times: Chrétien de Troyes (1130/1180) writes the legends of King Arthur. These themes resurface in the 19th century (artists are tired of ancient subjects) and the epics of chivalry are very fashionable: The myth of the knight and the beautiful redhead, Lancelot and Guenievre, Tristan and Iseult ... painting is inspired by Pre-Raphaelite works, an English artistic movement born in the years 1860/70. The style of this painting is similar to that of John Waterhouse or Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
