His father then worked at the prestigious manufacture in the dyeing workshop where he was recognized for his qualities as a colourist. There he climbed the hierarchical levels until he collaborated with the eminent theorist of color Michel-Eugène Chevreul, then director of dyes. Paul-Laurent Courtot follows in his father's footsteps, who brought him in as a student upholsterer at the factory with Galland and Maillard. He quickly became an upholsterer but finally entered the Beaux-Arts competition where he was placed third. At the age of 24, Paul-Laurent Courtot received the certificate of aptitude for teaching drawing. After seven years spent teaching in the schools of Vervins and Hirson (Aisne), he was appointed professor at Limoges where he taught until his retirement in 1917. From 1897, Paul-Laurent Courtot took part in the work of the Archaeological and Historical Society Limousin and begins to take time for him. He likes to draw the remains and buildings of Limoges which he finds interesting. But Limoges is modernizing and some old districts are unfortunately threatened with destruction. We must give the city more light, space, circulation ... It is therefore with the eyes of a historian - even an archaeologist - that the professor undertakes to preserve the memory of old Limoges. He puts his easel in the places that are dear to him and immortalizes them: the Abbessaille, the Rajat, the edges of Vienne, the Viraclaud district, Saint-Michel, the rue des Combes and so many others - of a somehow - intact thanks to him. The quality of his readings and his colors earned him admission to the Salon of French artists with, in particular, Courtyard at the rue du Consulat at the Salon of 1903. Paul-Laurent Courtot died on December 7, 1925. His estate was then liquidated at auction: thanks to the benevolence of the Limougeauds, deciding to organize a subscription in order to avoid the dispersion of its collection, many paintings still remain in Limoges, a large part of which is in the Musée des Beaux-arts.
