""consolation", XVIII Century"
Consolation: Oil on canvas (on its original canvas) representing children who come to console their father who thinks of his missing young wife, against a backdrop of the landscape. Canvas signed Jacques Noury (1747-1832) and dated 1778. Superb quality of details, and great delicacy in the composition of this typical 18th century French canvas. The games of hands and looks are particularly poignant. The treatment of the subject, the beauty of the children and the sensitivity of the scene give this canvas all its melancholy beauty but turned towards the future and the pursuit of life symbolized by the striking resemblance of children and their mother. Jacques Noury is a painter from Caen whose self-portrait is preserved in the museum. In its original frame, very good condition.
