"Octave Gallian (1855-1918) Seaside At Cap Brun In Toulon"
Superb and luminous work of the Toulon painter Octave Gallian representing a young angler on the rocks of the Oursinières at Cap Brun in Toulon. The work is framed in a magnificent Louis XIV frame in good condition which measures 61 cm by 82 cm and 38 cm by 61 cm without the frame. It is signed lower right. Octave Gallian was born in Toulon, which he left to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and at the Académie Julian with Jules Lefebvre, Gustave Boulanger and Charles Ginoux. He set up his studio in the Faubourg Saint-Honoré where he practiced the art of portraiture, especially female, but he often returned to the Provençal landscapes of his youth between Toulon and Martigues. He is a member of the Toulon Fine Arts Workshop. In 1887, he received the order for two decorative panels for the staircase of the Toulon art museum (Provencal fisherman and Vanneuse) which would be destroyed by bombardment during World War II. The painters of his region, Eugène-Baptiste Emile Dauphin, Vincent Courdouan, Jean Pezous, François Nardi, Joseph Garibaldi, Julien Gustave Gagliardini, were his friends; He exhibited at the Salon of French artists between 1878 and 1905. There he obtained an honorable mention in 1884 for Une bouée, rade de Toulon; this painting, catalog no. 995, was acquired by the State which donated it to the Musée de la Castre in Cannes. Leaving the official Salon for a while, he attended that of the National Society of Fine Arts from 1891 to 1894. He participated also at the exhibitions of the Amis des arts de Toulon, notably in 1902 with Le Castellet and La Baie des Anges; Works in the Angoulême public collections, Angoulême museum: Portrait of Raoul Verlet.
