"Pair Of Old Electrified Lamps"
Pair of lamps made at the end of the 19th century with a decor of Greco-ancient inspiration. The openwork gilt bronze base supports the orange earthenware body adorned with a painted enamel decoration with medallions in which are represented profiles of ancient warriors on a black background. These medallions are connected by a frieze of white Greek keys decorated with palmettes. The collar is also decorated with a frieze of pearls and another with Greek keys, painted white.
This piece is emblematic of the antiquizing movement specific to the 19th century and in particular to the Second Empire. Napoleon's Egyptian campaign in 1798 launched the fashion for Egyptomania and, more generally, Orientalism. The shapes, colors, patterns, and iconography of ancient Greece and Egypt are becoming very popular in the West.
One of the two more recent brass mouthpieces.
