Object description :

"Charles Gilbert Martin 1830-1905. Bouquet Of Flowers In A Rouen Planter."
Charles Gilbert-Martin, born August 26, 1839 in Gironde and died July 21, 1905 in St Thomas de Coniac.
Painter of landscapes, flowers, portraits,he is a cartoonist and journalist. On May 19, 1867, he founded Le Philosophe. Editor-in-chief of this satirical review, he produced most of the caricatures of it, alongside the painter Jean-Paul Laurens, who mainly drew scenes of manners. The Philosopher will only have 33 numbers due to censorship and a court decision, handed down in January 1868, which condemns Gilbert-Martin to a 200-franc fine and two months of detention at Sainte-Pélagie. Another satirical newspaper publishing drawings by the Girondin cartoonist, Le Hanneton was in turn struck down by a conviction a few months later. Gilbert-Martin, who also collaborates with La Rue de Jules Vallès, is indeed a republican opposed to the Second Empire. After the Revolution of September 4, 1870, Gilbert-Martin was attached for a few months to the Ministry of the Interior, then entrusted to Gambetta, and worked with the delegation of the government of national defense in Tours. He then joined the northern army commanded by Faidherbe. Captain of the staff, he rose to the rank of Squadron Leader during the last months of the war against Germany. In 1871 he moved to Bordeaux and drew caricatures for the satirical and political newspaper Le Don Quichotte. Besides drawing he writes and paints mostly still lifes. Our painting presents a palette of soft and delicate colors, the composition is harmonious very bright. The painting is painted on its original canvas and signed lower right.
