Michaël Doré (Max Gauquier), Bois d'Haine 1922.
Painter and draughtsman of figures, portraits, still lifes, imaginary landscapes and especially nudes and birds. Studied at the Brussels Academy with H. Van Haelen for drawing and Fr. Smeers for painting (1937 - 1940); at the Mons Academy (1940-42) with L. Buisseret. Sensitive and poetic painter. Manages to penetrate the soul of his subjects. Starts in a realistic style, but his works very quickly evoke a surrealist, symbolist and surrealist atmosphere. Maintains contacts with surrealist circles in Mons where he met Achille Chavée, Rémy Van Den Abeele, Pol Bury and Marcel Delmotte. Has painted self-portraits, portraits, figures, still lifes, imaginary landscapes, but especially nudes and birds. He succeeds in creating a dreamlike atmosphere and unexpected harmonies by mixing simple subjects but without any relation between them at first sight.
In the press: "Michaël Doré manages to penetrate the simplest secrets of nature. He belongs to those chosen ones who manage to observe the almost imperceptible movement of a bird that seems to be motionless. He succeeds in showing the miracle of a flower growing between stones or piercing the soul of an age-old stone, polished by time, water and wind". Works in the museums of Tournai, La Louvière, Bucharest and in the collection of the White House in Washington.
