Budai In Glazed Terracotta, 20th Century

Some present him as a laughing Buddha. What a mistake ! Buddha, if he surely laughed and even smiled, was a serious ascetic whose physique betrayed the sobriety of life. Nothing to do with this opulent and happy character that we present here. Budai is a key figure in popular Asian tradition. A divinity associated with happiness, prosperity and generosity, it changes its name according to the religious currents that adopt him. The Buddhist school even considers him to be a mahāyāna, an incarnation of Maitreya, the future Buddha.

Of Chinese origin, this legendary figure is said to have lived in the 10th century. He is still portrayed as stout, holding a Budai canvas bag that gives him his name. On our ceramic, the bag is held in the left hand. Budai had a reputation for fixing broken toys, which is why he is regularly accompanied by children.
