This bearded man portrait, is the work of a French School of the XIXth century, entourage of Jean-Jacques François Monanteuil. his French genre painter (1785-1860) was the favorite pupil of Girodet-Trioson who employed him in the execution of his most beautiful paintings.
He took part in the Exhibitions of 1812,1819,1824 and 1827. He taught drawing at the Academy of Alençon, from the death of his master Girodet in 1843 until his retirement in 1851 at Le Mans where he died, forgotten by his contemporaries.
His portraits in oil and pencil are distinguished by the resemblance and finesse of the touch. This Portrait of a bearded man is very powerful, very realistic. With a thoughtful and worried air, this old man leans with his left hand on a cane. This hand, very present and robust in the center of the composition, gives a real anchor.
The face is painted with great finesse: the wrinkles on the forehead, the folds around the mouth, the gaze with penetrating eyes. The grizzled beard and white hair frame the face, softening it.
Dressed in a brown coat that opens onto a reddish brown buttoned cardigan or jacket, this tone of dark tones is strongly enhanced by the paleness of the face which balances the colors.
This painting is an oil on canvas mounted on wood panel which leaves a little space all around.
Very good condition, slight lack at the top center. Without frame, dimensions H 63 cm / L 55 cm
