Old Persian Bakhtiar Rug, 125 Cm X 170 Cm, Hand-knotted Wool, 19th Century

Rare and beautiful old Bakhtiar from the middle of the 19th century, superb piece for lovers of old rugs in a state of discovery.
This rug measures 125cm wide by 170cm long.
These rugs are marketed under the name Bakhtiar (or also Baktiar, Bachtiar and Bakhtiari) These Bakhtiar are made with strong wool, they are beaten very strongly, which makes them very thick and strong.
They are considered to be some of the most durable Persian rugs.
A well-known motif is the so-called Khesti (garden) motif in which the carpet is divided into boxes containing plants and animals, symbolism of the Persian garden, but there are also medallion designs which represent trees of life with influences from the Isfahan carpet. The best Bakhtiar rugs with the densest knotting are occasionally referred to as "Bibibaff". In the Zagros mountains, west of Isfahan, near Shahr-e-Kurd, live the bakhtiari nomads. Most of them speak Persian or a Lori dialect, while others living in Khuzestan province speak Arabic.
The bakhtiaris wear wide trousers, a round bell-shaped hat and a short tunic, the origin of which dates back as far as the Parthian Empire (from -200 to 200 AD). The chiefs (or khans) of the Bakhtiari nomads have regularly held important positions in Persian society.
