Two beautiful mother-of-pearl, each deeply engraved with a beautiful rider on prancing horse, Saint George ?, Another Saint rider defeats a janissary. We still see some traces of a fine original polychromy. The Franciscan Monks had introduced the craft of mother-of-pearl circa 16th century to Bethlehem, it was exported well around the Mediterranean.These two pieces date from the 18th-19th century, intended to adorn the belt buckles of Balkan women, whose general shape is Ottoman, they are witnesses of Christian resistance in the part of Europe occupied by the Turks, there are some at the Rila monastery museum in Bulgaria, there were some in Romania, Greece, Armenia. This large ventral jewel was considered as a shield, Saint George fought the demon there, defending motherhood and fidelity.
Good condition, some flaws on edge.
