THE CUSTOM OF BETEL QUID
Used recently in India, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Nepal, Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Laos, Burma, Pakistan , Cambodia, New Guinea, Oceania and even South China, the betel quid consisted of three essential elements: betel leaf, areca nut and lime, the latter revealing certain flavors. Depending on the region and the user's palate, cumin, ginger, pepper, cardamom, coriander, cashew paste, cinnamon, cloves, mint essence, saffron, liquorice, even powdered tobacco and sandalwood bark were added. This vegan practice was appreciated for its therapeutic powers, refreshing stimulants and also euphoric. It warmed "body and mind". At the height of this custom, they were hundreds of millions of followers to know the benefits and other effects of the betel quid. In the 20th century, the tradition of betel has gradually given way to that of ……… cigarettes.
