Bust of a woman with a hat, artistic bronze mounted on a pentagonal base, W. Herring, Paris, signed on the reverse, c. 1900. Extremely fine work on the hat or lace. Base dimensions: H. 3 cm; side 9 cm; total: H. 44 x L. 21 x D. 18 cm The absence of documentation concerning W. Herring and the precence of the W as a signature suggests that it is a pseudonym of Elsie Ward Hering. American artist, wife of New York sculptor Henry Hering. Elsie Ward Hering is the author of numerous decorative objects designed in bronze or pewter, in a pure 1900 style, imbued with delicacy and grace.
