If this object can sometimes receive the denomination of church stand, that of lectern is more appropriate. Thus, the church stand is intended for reading the Epistle and that of the Gospel while the lectern is reserved for reading the choir books. To facilitate reading, a large candlestick was often placed next to the desk. This particular arrangement encouraged the use of light reflecting materials - as here gilded bronze - in the design of the object, thus enhancing the book it was carrying.
A true artistic creation of the 19th century, our lectern is entirely imbued with this neo-Gothic taste inspired by the work of Mérimée: cabochons in the style of precious stones on religious reliquaries capture the light and direct the gaze towards these painted enamel medallions evoking the founding figures of Christian worship. This elegant «return to the roots" borrows from noble materials such as gilded bronze and painted enamels but without having the pretension of too precious and too pompous liturgical objects of the 18th century, this is surely the reason why (in addition to the cost) colored glass cabochons are substituted for the precious stones.
