During his lifetime, Jean-Jacques de Boissieu enjoyed the esteem of European collectors and the public. He was compared to Rembrandt. A painter on silk from Lyon, Boissieu came to Paris from 1761 to 1764. There he met the engraver Jean-Georges Wille (1715 - 1808), the architect Jacques-Germain Soufflot (1713 - 1780), as well as the painters Claude Joseph Vernet (1714 - 1789), Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725 - 1805) and Claude-Henri Watelet (1718 - 1786). Between 1765 and 1766 he made his Grand Tour in the company of the Duc de la Rochefoucauld, then returned to Lyon where he was received at the Academy of Sciences, Belles-lettres and Arts in 1780. In addition, exercising various administrative functions, he was not troubled during the Revolution (his copper plates were even protected by decree) thanks to the friendship of Jacques-Louis David and he ended his career as mayor of Lentilly.
