Belgian School

Littr. Victor Joseph Gishlain Demanet studied fine arts at the Academy of Namur with the sculptor Désiré Hubin before joining the army. During his military service in Brussels, he discovered the work of Constantin Meunier (1831-1905). Like him, he became a socially committed artist who placed the worker at the center of his work. Inspired by a visit to Paris in 1921, he resumed his career as a sculptor and moved to Brussels in 1926. Demanet made realistic portraits, in medals, groups of figures and monuments. He exhibited internationally, winning the gold medal at the Liège International Exhibition in 1930 for his monumental work "la métallurgie". Sculpts the Royal Family of Belgium: the bust of Albert I and Princess Astrid; statue of King Albert I of Givet, Arlon and Vichy; monument of Queen Astrid in Kraainem-Stockel and Charleroi; statue of Leopold II in Namur.
