Description :
Painted and gilded soft porcelain, chiseled bronze.

This very beautiful pair of 18th century vases is similar in shape to architectural casseroles. A scalloped bronze base adorned with foliage carries the pedestal of the vase. The fluted pedestal is enhanced by golden threads, its curve flares out horizontally which is typical of the design of pedestals in the 18th century. A bucolic scene on a decor of ancient monuments surrounds the body of the vase, we see part of Colin Maillard and escarpolette. The painting is an animated scene and made entirely around the vase, which requires considerable work with an unrelenting quality, we will think of Boucher or Caton, for example, who committed similar decorations in the same period. The sèvres blue background is decorated with gilding patterns enhanced by a complex and elegant work with agate. Crown lids, all of the reliefs of which are also surrounded by gold, refine the silhouette of these vases (one of them is placed at an angle to show its proportions). Beaded bronze rings adorn the base, neck and base of the body.
Like all the Sèvres vases, we will appreciate its exceptional quality.
Mark with two entwined Ls and letters BB in blue dating them in 1779.
We are at the end of the use of soft dough gradually replaced by hard dough after the discovery in 1768 of kaolin in quantity at St Yrieix near Limoges, in 1804, soft dough will be definitively abandoned. During this transition, the mark with two Ls will be surmounted by a crown to indicate a hard paste object (1769 to 1793), thus making the distinction with the last soft pastes as on our vases which do not have this crown.
Its technically justified disappearance will all the same lose elements of ornamentation which made the "exceptional" of the XVIIIth century.
