"Indian Mythological Figure: Kala - South East Asia"
This monumental monstrous head was carved in a hard, red and fine laterite, used in construction and sculpture in South-East Asia (Thailand, Laos ..). It could be a representation of Kala, this mythological figure of Hindu origin very important in the iconography of the Indian world and the Indianized kingdoms of Southeast Asia. Kâla is seen as fate, or as the god of death. Its monstrous mouth often overlooks the entrances to temples.
