He was a well-known Belgian painter of realism. He was taught in The Hague with Bartholomäeus van Hove, Wijnand Nuijen and Andreas Schelfhout, among others. Between 1841 and 1848 Leickert lived and worked in The Hague and from 1849 to 1883 in Amsterdam.
In 1856 he was elected member of the Royal Academy of Amsterdam. In the last years he has traveled to Italy, France and Germany.
He specialized in landscape painting, in particular in winter representations.
