Small chip on the frame. Armand Massonet (Saint-Gilles 1892 - Jette 1979). Painter, watercolorist but above all draftsman of characters and genre scenes. Renowned portrait painter, illustrator and poster designer. His style is very dynamic, translating the movement in a stylized way, with broad brushstrokes and with a clear palette. Virtuoso draftsman and watercolorist. Student in sculpture at the Academy of Saint-Gilles (1918-19, A. De Tombay) and in art history by A. Vermeylen. Was a stretcher bearer at the front during the First World War. Made many sketches at the Yser. Illustrates the review of the front Claque à fond (1917-18), of which he is director, and of Mechelen aan het front. Studied in Paris at the National School of Fine Arts (F. Cormon) while on leave. Member of the Artistic Section at the front since 1918. Takes part in the exhibitions of the Belgische Standaard in De Panne in 1917 and 1918. Is in charge of mission as a painter in the service of the army (1939-40). Drawing teacher at the Ecole normale in Brussels. Author of numerous educational books on drawing and watercolor. Retrospectives at the town hall of Saint-Gilles (1968 and 1992). Works at the Cabinet des Estampes and at the Army Museums of Brussels and Paris, and at the Museums of Reims and Riga.
