Fragment of carved ivory from a Mammoth Tusk. This magnificent ivory work of great finesse of execution comes from a tusk of a woolly mammoth from Siberia, which disappeared at the end of the Pleistocene around 10,000 years ago. The Chinese artist who sculpted it represented a mountainous path lined with longevity pines and populated by bodhisattvas preparing to offer an elephant to the Buddha.
