Regularly exhibited in the permanent room dedicated to him these works allow us to understand the different facets of this illustrious Chalonnais who was at the same time diplomat, libertine author, disseminator of Egyptian art, Minister of Arts under the Empire, first director of the Louvre, but also draftsman, engraver and great collector. The literary work After having written a play Julie ou le Bon Père and a libertine novel Point de matin, Dominique-Vivant Denon collaborated in the writing of the Picturesque Voyage or Description of the Kingdoms of Naples and Sicily (1781 - 1786) , one of the most famous illustrated travel accounts of the time. As part of the contingent of scholars who accompanied Bonaparte during the Egyptian Expedition, Dominique-Vivant Denon published on his return the story of his Voyage in Lower and Upper Egypt during the campaigns of General Bonaparte. Illustrated with engraved plates, the book was immediately very successful. The drawn and engraved work Never having ceased to practice drawing and engraving throughout his life, the artist Dominique Vivant Denon defined himself as a “professional amateur”. His work shows a great freedom of interpretation, established on the fringes of contemporary artistic trends and which remains intrinsically linked to his person, his erudition and his curiosity The collection kept at the museum includes more than one hundred drawings, portraits of members of society that Denon frequents (close friends, diplomats, scholars, servants or sovereigns), sketches brought back from his travels in Italy or Egypt, drawings made under his direction during the Napoleonic campaigns, as well as several hundred prints divided between original engravings, engravings in erotic connotations drawn from the priapic work, lithographs, or engravings of reproduction of the paintings of 17th and 18th century painters that Denon is fond of. Art, museums, distribution Minister of the arts under the Empire, Denon was associated with the progressive development of artistic programs to the glory of Napoleon. Throughout the First Empire he exercised control over French artistic production and had the Napoleonic gesture illustrated by numerous drawings, engravings, medals or paintings. Director of the Napoleon Museum, now the Louvre Museum, he traveled through Europe following the victorious Napoleonic armies to select from the conquered cities the masterpieces intended to be deposited in the Parisian museum. Denon collector After having resigned from his functions at the fall of the Empire, Dominique-Vivant Denon devoted himself to the preparation of a vast work on the history of art, which would be completed after his death by Amaury-Duval and will appear in 1829 under the title: The Monuments of the Drawing Arts among both ancient and modern peoples.
