Imposing oil on religious canvas early eighteenth.

Very beautiful representation of Saint Peter repentant.
Follower of Jusepe de Ribera.

This religious scene relates the moment when Peter denied Christ three times before the rooster sang.This painting represents Peter regretting his betrayal.Saint Peter is easily recognized here by his short white beard, and his tonsured skull.
He is depicted with eyes covered with tears, turned to heaven, hands joined for prayer.The folds of the mantle are wide, presenting a thick cloth.
His callous hands recall his activity as a fisherman.He seems to emerge from the darkness.To his right are the Gospel texts.Following his repentance, Saint Peter would continue to preach the Gospel, gather disciples and organize the Roman Church, of which he would have been the first bishop.He will later become the guardian of paradise
This painting of Saint Peter, which seems to emerge from the darkness, is all done in the style of the darkness of the Caravaggio painters of the seventeenth.

Like all the paintings I propose, this great oil on canvas is in its juice (nature).It is sold with its original frame and chassis.Unfortunately, it has been subjected to the outrages of time, in fact, more than 3 centuries have passed since the creation of this painting (see photo).It’s to be restored.
Like most religious paintings of that time, it is not signed to my knowledge. Of high quality, there is certainly a nice discovery to make for those who will know to whom to attribute it.
