Frans II Pourbus (1569, 1622)

Dynasty of Flemish painters. Pieter Pourbus (1524-1584) is from Gouda; he probably received his training in Bruges, where he was appointed to the corporation of painters in 1543, and of which he was juror and dean, which attests to his notoriety. He was also a surveyor and cartographer. His portraits are variously appreciated. Frans I Pourbus said the Elder (1545-1581) is the son of Pieter Pourbus; born in Bruges, he died before his father, of whom he was a pupil, causing confusion in the attribution of their respective works. His son Frans II Pourbus said the Younger (1569-1622) was born in Antwerp where he was received as a master in 1591. A pupil of Otto van Veen, he was a painter in 1600 at the court of the Duke of Mantua, whom he followed to Turin and Lorraine, then in Paris, where he became attached to Marie de Medici and Anne of Austria. Frans II Pourbus was essentially a portrait painter; his work has baroque accents, but is not always easily distinguished from that of his father.
