Object description :

"French School XIXth "romeo And Juliet By Shakespeare" Couder Theater London Paris Tragedy Capulet Montaigu"
FRENCH SCHOOL OF THE FIRST HALF OF THE XIXth century

Workshop or follower of Louis Charles Auguste COUDER (1789-1879)

"Scene of Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare"

Oil on canvas,
No apparent signature,

Beautiful finely crafted work of the French school of the first half of the nineteenth century which represents a scene from Romeo and Juliet from the novel by William Shakespeare: "Romeo believing Juliet dead poisons herself near her; when the sleeping pill she had taken ceases to have effect, she is wake up, but to receive the last sighs of her lover. "
The painter was able to transcribe the emotion of this tragedy, in particular through the expressiveness of the faces including that of Juliet who is mourning the death of Romeo.

We can compare our work to Auguste Couder's painting "A scene from Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare" kept at the Museum of Fine Arts in Angers and exhibited at the Salon of 1821 in Douai.
As well as an ink drawing from Couder (MFA Angers) which reproduces our work.

Another unknown work by the painter Couder, on the same subject, is exhibited at the Salon de Arras in 1821.

Note also that a copy after Couder made by the painter Henri Bougenier is exhibited at the Salon of 1828 "Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare" .

Nb: Old small restorations are visible on the back of the canvas.

Dimensions: 59.5 x 73.5 cm without its frame and 76 x 92 cm with its original gilded wood frame.
