Born in 1533 in Hoorn, a small town in North Holland, on the banks of the Zuyderzee, the engraver Cornelis Coort (1533-1578) was a pupil of Jérôme Cock in Antwerp before settling in Italy, in Venice, Bologna then in Rome, where he founded a school. His engravings have helped spread the art of Italian masters in Northern Europe: Titian, Raphael, Polidore de Caravaggio.
