"Gilt Bronze Relief Pius V"
Relief in gilded bronze representing Pope Pius V in right profile, on a background of red silk. Attributed to Francesco RIGHETTI (Rome 1749 - 1819), known for his beautiful bronze castings after antique and Baroque models. Trained by Luiji VALADIER (1726-1785). From 1805, he was in charge of the papal foundry in the Vatican; Antonio CANOVA's favorite founder. Oval carved gilded wooden frame, with decorations in the upper part of an antique head, decorated with flowers and branches of foliage. Early 17th century frame (unrestored). Pope Pius V (Antonio GHISLIERI: 1504-1572), 225th Pope of the Catholic Church from 1566 to 1572, canonized in 1712.
