This 17th century bust of a woman in polychrome wood has the singularity of being the upper part of an altarpiece figure which accompanied the central subject. It is typical of the Bamberg region, a city in southern Germany, rich in historical monuments with a cathedral which is one of the oldest of the Holy Roman Empire.
The strength of this face with its downcast gaze is highlighted by the folds of the wimple that enclose it. With her hair covered, this woman was either a married woman or a widow.
The face in the round, this sculpture is partially hollowed out. The very present polychromy adds a very decorative quality to this feminine bust.
Very good state. Lacks and cracks due to time.
