17th century sculpture.
Southern Italy.
Large polychrome wood sculpture. It represents a monk in an imposing black toga with a hood and wide sleeves.
The facial expression with exaggerated features conveyed the idea of preaching to the viewer.
There are some restorations and gaps on the polycromy, which among other things reveal a very interesting technical detail.
You can see a fabric that has been applied to the wood, under the prep coat of plaster and paint.
The hands are the result of the restoration.
