Signed, dedicated and dated 1853 on the right in the center.
Note a lack of paint on the jacket on the left and a small hole with a lack of paint at the bottom center also on the jacket.

History painter student of Jean-Baptiste Regnault and Jacques-Louis David at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Auguste Couder began at the Salon of 1814 with "The Death of General Moreau" (kept at the Museum of Fine Arts from Brest). He was elected member of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1839, and promoted to Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1841.
A number of his works can be seen in public collections
