A cousin of the fan, the fire screen is used to protect a lady from the heat of a fireplace and its sparks. Intended for private use, it received less attention than the fan in its design. Once the screen was damaged or out of fashion, the owner threw it mercilessly into the hearth of the fireplace. These hand fire screens have thus become - today - rare objects of curiosity.
The patinated and gilded brass case adopts the Gothic Revival style claimed as a trademark by the English house Day B., Birmingham. The silk screen in a very beautiful Prussian blue is in good condition and mounted on a brass rod. A copy close to ours is on display at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London (British Galleries, Room 120, The Wolfson Galleries, case 1)
