We can make out the alpine mountains in the background. Beautiful colors. The architectural parts such as the fortified bridge and the buildings are executed with a knife giving relief to the whole.
Original frame gilded with leaf (wear).
A pupil of Claude Monet, Antoine Guillemet and Alexandre Nozal, Espérance Léon Cléophas Broquet, aka Léon Broquet mainly produces oils on canvas, but also etchings, watercolors and murals. Renowned as an army painter during the 1914-1918 war, he left around 1929 to join the group of painters at Concarneau. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris from 1901 until 1931, and received a second-class medal in 1912 for Winter in the Marsh, Snow Effect, which ranked him out of competition for the rest of his career (source wikipédia)
