"First Art, African Tribal, Africa Mali Anthropomorphic Dogon Statuette In Carved Stone"
Beautiful Dogon statuette in carved stone, African Tribal Art from Mali
Height: 20.8 cm / Width: 4.5 cm / Depth: 9 cm / Weight: 1.185 g
**Circa 1940-1950 **
For this type of Dogon statuette, the character embodies an ancestor; sitting or squatting with the knees bent and the hands gathered under a broad, flattened beard streaked with decorative patterns inspired by bird wing pinnae.
For the most part, these Dogon stone sculptures are carved at the request of the family but can also be the object of worship or rites on the part of the community, sometimes commemorating the founding of a village, for example.
However, their functions are still relatively unknown. Dogon religious ceremonies and rites are organized around four main cults; Binoo, invoking the spirit world is led by the priest of Binoo; the Wagen, ancestor worship under the authority of the patriarch; the Lebe, relating to fertility, under the spiritual authority of the Hogon and the society of masks concerning funerals.
