Framed in a medallion, a turned blackened wood and gilded bronze frame of the 19th century, it is a relief of compressed burl wood, cover of a "demi-solde" snuffbox, illustrated of a terrible scene from the Retreat from Russia by the Napoleonic armies, circa 1812 .... Wood of the medallion, hot pressed in a steel mold, has kept this distressing image in good relief, and has a beautiful patina. French wounded attacked by the Cossacks ....
