"Sentali Shield"
A rather rare shield from Bengal, India, used by Sentali residing in the area. Sandals are the largest tribe in Jharkhand State in India in terms of population and are also found in the states of Assam, Tripura, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and West Bengal. They are the largest ethnic minority in the Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions of northern Bangladesh. Unlike many hand guards, this shield has its concave side facing outward. The steel disc is mounted with a brass dome in the center and decorated with 10 small brass domes and engraved brass circles. The two handles, one blade and one ring-shaped, are attached to the steel disc with steel rivets. This is a very rare authentic piece dating from the end of the 19th century. A solid and well executed piece with a beautiful aged patina. Very good condition with a small dent to the grip of the spike.
