ORIGINAL DRY POINT SIGNED IN THE PLANK AND COUNTERSIGNED AT THE LEAD MINE BY PAUL ASHBROOK REPRESENTING TWO CHESS PLAYERS - AMERICAN SCHOOL AND ORIENTALIST SCENE - REALIZED IN THE YEARS 1925 - 1930 AND DRAWN AT 50 SEL SEL BONUS - LES AREMPLAIRES GENERAL - Painter, illustrator, printmaker, lithographer and teacher Paul Ashbrook was born Paul Von Eschenbach in New York and began his training in 1885 at the Art Students League, where he studied with William Merritt Chase and then worked as an illustrator for Charles Klackner in New York. He moved to Cincinnati in 1900 and headed the design department of a prominent lithographer there, and studied with Frank Duveneck at the Cincinnati Art Academy, where he also taught from 1914 to 1919. In 1917, he changed his name to its English equivalent as a result of the rising tide of anti-German sentiment. From 1920 to 1929, Ashbrook headed the design department of the Strobridge Lithograph Company, where he designed numerous posters for the Ringling Brothers / Barnum & Bailey Circus during this time. He traveled frequently to Europe and Mexico starting in 1926. Many of his paintings and prints were inspired by these trips. He died in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
