"Angelica Kauffmann (1741-1807), Attr. A Pair Of Allegorical Paintings"
Angelica Kauffmann (1741-1807), attr. A pair of allegorical paintings: "Flora completed the flowers of the painter Varelst" and "Venus rebukes Ganymede, who defeated Amor at craps" This pair of masterfully oil-in-gris circular paintings was created circa 1780-s. Both scenes date back to two poems by the English poet Matthew Prior (1664 Middlesex - 1721). The subject, the style and the composition of these paintings absolutely correspond to all the stylistic criteria of the works of the famous allegorical artist and Austro-Swiss Neo-Claassicist portrait painter Angelica Kauffmann (1741 - 1807). These paintings have been confirmed by experts from the renowned Austrian gallery Hassfurther in Vienna as authentic works of Angelica Kauffmann (a copy of the estimate will be attached to the paintings). We have found copperplate engravings after these paintings, published by the engraver Thomas Burke in 1784. It was further stated that Kauffmann created several similar circular gray paintings in 1780 (see additional photos from "Retrospective. Angelica Kauffmann", Catalog exhibition, Düsseldorf-Munich-Chur, 1998-1999, edition Gerd Hatje, 1999).
