"Anna Palm De Rosa (1859-1924) Horses In The Meadow, Watercolor, Painter From Sweden Stockholm"
Anna PALM DE ROSA (1859-1924) Beautiful watercolor representing a mare and her foal in a meadow, size 34.5cm by 50cm, signed Anna Palm lower left and a place Gassetin? Probably in Italy where she stayed with her husband This watercolor has freckles visible on the photos Anna Sofia Palm de Rosa (December 25, 1859 - May 1924) is a Swedish painter. In the 1890s, she was one of the most popular Swedish painters with her watercolors of steamboats and sailboats and her scenes of Stockholm. She also painted a memorable picture of a card game in the Brøndums Hotel in Skagen while spending the summer with the painters of Skagen. At 36, Anna Palm left Sweden for good, spending the rest of her life in southern Italy where she married an infantry officer. Palm de Rosa was among eighty-four artists who signed the 1885 letter calling for radical changes in the teaching of the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts which they considered outdated. Nevertheless, she exhibited at the Academy in 1885 and 1887 and, from 1889 to 1891, she taught watercolor there. She was also a member of a brand new association, Svenska konstnärinnor (Swedish artists), with Eva Bonnier, Hanna Pauli and Mina Bredberg. The watercolors of marine scenes with steamers and ships that she painted during this time contributed to her growing fame. She began to paint small vedute to satisfy her many clients, also painting scenes from the city of Stockholm2. On New Year's Day 1885, at the age of 36, she left Sweden for good. After spending a year in Paris, she went to Italy where she met her future husband, Infantry Lieutenant Alfredo de Rosa. After their marriage in Paris in 1901, the couple first lived in Capri and finally in 1908 settled in Sant'Anastasia near Naples. In addition to scenes from Italian life, she continued to paint Stockholm landscapes, including paintings by Gustaf Adolfs torv (in) with the construction of the opera house or the General Exhibition of Art and Industry in Stockholm of 1897 (in). The only explanation for her interest in these recent developments is that she must have received photos from Sweden, which served as the basis for these paintings. She might even see used photos of the Swede Frans G. Klemming (who is also behind some oil paintings by Robert Lundberg) 2. During World War I, when her husband was called, Palm de Rosa became very productive in her paintings, especially in Baïes, where she spent a year. After the war, his health was increasingly fragile, until his death in May 1924. cf Wikipedia
