A note: some wear on the lacquer and decorations of the upper plate, some slight accidents and lack of wood on the sides of the leaf, some scratches and wear of time, take a good look at the photos. * Louis Majorelle (1859-1926) After having followed the courses of Théodore Devilly and Charles Pêtre at the School of Fine Arts in Nancy, Louis Majorelle was admitted to the School of Fine Arts in Paris in 1877 in the studio by the painter Aimé Millet. Two years later, the death of his father forced him to return to Nancy. With his brother Jules, he took over the family business of furniture and earthenware manufacturing. In 1894, after a production of historical inspiration, Louis Majorelle replaced the varnished or painted decoration of rococo and Japanese furniture in favor of inlaid decoration with naturalist and symbolist references. Metalwork is developed in his workshops for the production of bronzes adorning furniture, but also for lighting in collaboration with Daum from 1898. He has his ceramics edited in various workshops in the Lorraine region and produces models of sandstone objects for Alphonse Cytère (Rambervillers) and the Mougin brothers. His multiple activities led him to open numerous exhibition stores, notably in Paris, Lyon and Lille. In 1901, he was one of the vice-presidents of the Ecole de Nancy. ** The School of Nancy Spearhead of Art Nouveau in France whose essential inspiration is in the forms of plants (ginkgo, pennywort, giant hogweed, water lily, thistle, cucurbitaceae…) and animals (dragonflies…). This alliance is based on extensive research into use in glassware, ironwork, steel and wood to put beauty in everyone's hands and thus bring art into homes.
