Object description :

"Louis Sauvageau (1822-1874) - Pair Of Marble Vestals - Circa 1860"
Louis Sauvageau (1822-1874)
Pair of vestals in the antique style.
Marble.
Signed on the base.
About 1860.

Louis Sauvageau was a Parisian sculptor who exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1848 to 1874. He was noticed several times for his work, notably at the Salon of 1863 when he was quoted by the Beaux-Arts magazine in glowing terms. He also realized the fountain, now disappeared, of the place aux Gueldres in Saint-Denis, near to Paris.
This pair of sculptures presents a classical subject of vestals holding a vase on their head with one hand and an amphora with the other. The contrapposto they adopt is symmetrical, letting the large cloth in which they are draped cover their hips with delicate folds.
