Object description :

"Edouard Pingret, Pupil Of David - Large Portrait Of A Man, Empire Period 1813 - 103cm X 121cm"
French School from the early 19th century, large portrait of a notable under the Empire seated at his desk. He is dressed in a blue jacket with a high collar, a shirt and a tie of white lace, trousers with bridge in white casimir like those worn by Napoleon. The antique hairstyle is very fashionable in the Empire and the posture with the hand in the jacket an obvious homage to the Emperor. The eye is lively, the character well marked. Our man seems a force of nature, a giant, a very tall man for his time. The portrait is presented in a beautiful wooden frame gilded with gold leaf from the Restoration period. Oil on canvas, Empire period, the painting is signed E Pingret and dated 1813 lower left. Edouard Pingret 1785-1869 is a French neoclassical painter, who specialized in historical scenes, battles, portraits and lithographs. He was a student of Jacques-Louis David and Jean-Baptiste Regnault, then at the Saint Luc Academy in Rome. Coming from the middle of the bourgeoisie, his father was conventional which gave him a network in the upper spheres of power which probably benefited Edouard Pingret, in addition to his qualities as a painter. In 1808, he painted a portrait of Napoleon. From 1810, he exhibited at the Paris Salons where he received several medals. Under the Restoration, he received several official commissions from Louis Philippe (his portrait with Queen Victoria and several paintings from the Gallery of Battles at the Palace of Versailles. From 1851 he moved to Mexico where he had great success with the Court and the great Mexican families. Beautiful museum quality painting, in a superb setting. Large monumental format. Beautiful amateur piece. Excellent condition, the painting was re-lined in the 19th century, we had it cleaned. The light UV showed an old restoration on the trousers, but the main elements (the face) are original and by the hand of the master. The frame is gilded with gold leaf and has also been cleaned. Everything is in excellent Condition Frame dimensions: 103 by 121cm Canvas dimensions: 81.5cm by 100.5cm
